Top Ten Movie Brothers

bluesbros.jpg

Step Brothers is coming out this weekend, which stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as you guessed it, step-brothers, who are forced to get along when their parents marry. There have been a lot of brother-brother combinations in movies, and on the heels of what I think will be another noteworthy fraternal pairing, we examine the greatest brother teams in film history.

See the complete list

1. Blues Brothers: Jake and Elwood Blues

Elwood and Jake Blues tore a path across America with the help of God himself to save their beloved home from foreclosure, and rubbed shoulders with scores of musical legends along the way. The classic road-trip disaster comedy had humble beginnings as a sketch on Saturday Night Live, but the genius of now dead John Belushi and his chemistry with fellow SNL alum Dan Aykroyd catapulted this musical duo in to top spot on our list.

2. Godfather Trilogy: The Corleones

One of the best, if not THE best film series ever made, revolves around family and honor. The complex relationship between Sonny, Michael, and Fredo Corleone is one of the focal points of the trilogy, and their heartbreaking conclusions prove that although it isn’t water, some things are thicker than blood. Al Pacino’s performances alone vaults this group to number three on the list.

3. Slap Shot: The Hanson Brothers

This hockey comedy starring Paul Newman is one of the funniest sports movies ever made, and is all the more enjoyable when the Hanson Brothers are on screen. They are three thick skulled violence loving brothers from Saskatchewan who become crowd favorites for their ridiculous antics. My personal favorites check in at number three.

4. Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill: Vincent and Vic Vega

Although they never appear on screen in any film together, and there is no evidence, Quentin Tarantino has stated that the character Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction and Vic Vega from Reservoir Dogs are in fact brothers. Not just brothers, but two of the most ruthless hitmen brothers to ever grace the silver screen. For a role that re-vitalized John Travolta’s career, and the only role that ever vitalized Michael Madsen’s, these two land at number four.

5. Rain Man: Charlie and Raymond Babbit

Charlie, played by Tom Cruise, is a self-obsessed prick, and Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman, is an autistic savant who is left their father’s fortune. They travel cross country together and form a bond along the way. Hoffman won an Oscar for this performance, and the movie won Best Picture. Easy to see why these two make it to number five on our list.

6. Twins: Julius and Vincent Benedict

The sheer joy of this movie could probably cure the world hunger crisis. Arnold Schwarzenegger is very big and strong, and Danny DeVito is very short and ugly. And they’re twins! What a strange pairing! How comical! Both find love and happiness in their quest to locate their biological mother, and on their journey to number six on our list.

7. The Lion King: Mufasa and Scar

Widely considered the best of all Disney movies, The Lion King is a tale of betrayal, power struggles, and duty, all drawn in cartoon and acted out by animals who talk. Scar and Mufasa, voiced by Jeremy Irons and James Earl Jones, are brother lions, one of whom kills the other to gain control of the land. Mufasa’a son is convinced it is his fault and is sent in to exile only to return years later to claim back the throne. Despite being dead most of the film, Mufasa’s inspiring cloud appearance scene pushed these two over the edge, and landed them at number seven.

8. Adaptation: Charlie and Donald Kaufman

The real life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman is portrayed by Nicolas Cage, who also acts as his fictional twin Donald in this twisted tale of orchids and happenstance. The film itself garnered the first ever academy award for a fictional person, when Charlie and his ‘brother’ Donald, took the trophy home for Best Original Screenplay.

9. Stuck On you: Bob and Walt Tenor

stuckonyoupic.jpg

Not a good movie, but points are given for the sheer absurdity of having Greg Kinnear and Matt Damon connected to one another for most of the film, playing Bob and Walt Tenor, siamese twins who have stayed attached in to adulthood, and are now discovering the limitations that their conditions has given them. They make the list ultimately for their relationship, which strengthens despite their eventual seperation in the film. Touching stuff coming from the Farrelly Brothers

10. Dead Ringers: Beverly and Elliot Mantle

Jeremy Irons, the only two timer on the list, plays identical twins, who are top flight gynecologists that often switch identities to enjoy all aspects of eachothers lives. The movie is fucked beyond explanation, but Irons is riveting, and the direction from David Cronenberg is top notch. Their twisted performence lands the Mantle Brothers at number ten.
